  1. Johanna Hamlyn Says:

I believe Chung Leong built his practice at 609 Barkley St, Ballarat. The residence and clinic is still being utilized as a Chinese Medicine practice today. This was merely by chance, but an old timer remembered his mother taking him there and a decendant of a Mr. Chung dropped to see her grandfathers home. Dr. Brett Hamlyn reestablished the clinic in 2002. In 2009 Dr Adelle Gordon took over the practice.

Thanks for this. I have started writing a book ‘Chinese Herbalists in Victoria – For better or worse ‘. Interesting that the location is still so acceptable for a medical practice over a 100 years later.

hi carol.james lee chung leong was my grandfather.such an interesting man trying to trace his family tree is such a huge job.i have a booklet that was published about him with testimonials from the people of ballarat.makes me very proud.would love to contact anybody who knows more about him.i have found the man whos father took over our grandfathers practise when he went back to hongkong when my dad was a boy.my brother basil and i share the passion of trying to find people who knew anything about him at all.so if anyone can help can they please contact me you have my email.he also featured in a book called life after gold and about ten years ago his picture of him in his car out the front of the practise in 1 humffray st was featured on a postcard.would love a copy of the postcard if any collectors have one.keep me posted please.we would be most appreciative
    regard sharon

  4. Les Youie,OAM Says:

    Dear Johanna and Basil,

Yes, Mr Chung Leong did have his practice at No. 1 Humffray St., Ballarat East, but the house numbers have now been changed and the house is now 101 I believe.

Anyway, it is opposite a Builder’s business that was known as Sim’s Timber Yard during the 1930’s and 1940’s.
My father, Peter Poon Youie, took over Mr Chung Leong’s practice in late December, 1936 and we lived there from then until Mr Chung Leong and his family (including Basil and Gloria) returned from China? Hong Kong? after the Second World War.

My father then moved to Peel St., Ballarat. My mother and the rest of our family moved to Richmond. My father stayed in Ballarat, commuting each week-end to Richmond, Victoria where my mother had a small mixed business and the three older sons worked. He died in 1949. What happened to Mr Chung Leong after his return I do not know. Perhaps Basil could fill us in???

One of my cousins, Roland Quing Yen arrived from Hong Kong around 1939/1940 and started a Herbalist practice in Main Road, Ballarat East. His father before him had pracitised in Hamilton, Victoria during the twenties and thirties, I believe.

I am trying to find information on a Melbourne herbalist around 1920,
Leong Lee. Any suggestions as to where I might start? I see he is on your list.
